EXERCISE THOSE MUSCLES

Exercise is one significant part of staying healthy. Muscles need to be flexed in order for them to retain their tone, mass and flexibility. Even machines grow rusty when not used for long periods of time. That is precisely the reason why men who want to have great muscles go to the gym often. The more a muscle is used, the greater it would develop. Exercising also increases the secretion of testosterone (the true male sexual hormone) in men, allowing maximum growth and development of their secondary male sexual characteristics.

Exercising also lowers blood pressure because it "eats" up the lipid deposits in the blood vessels thereby avoiding plaque formation. Blood circulation is also increased allowing the blood to flow freely and "unresisted".

Brisk walking is a good form of exercise for people of all ages. There are very few restrictions - unlike with other forms. Walking is generally good for the heart, for the elderly, for children and young adults and is even advised for pregnant women in their late stages, in most cases.

Before you go to work, do a 30 minute "jog-in place" workout. In the office, do your own errands. Walk around during breaks instead of sitting down. Run for that cup of tea. Do 10 minute-walks within the day, as often as you can.

Just like any other exercise; however, consult your doctor first before commencing on your exercise regimen.

COLLEGE DAYS – CAN YOUR CHILD HANDLE IT?

image from Free Clip Art

BY: GUARDIAN ANGEL

While it is good that we as parents help our child choose a college course -How to help your Child choose a College Course, it should not stop there. In fact, it’s just the beginning and there are more pressures ahead. This is because college is a totally different world and our child may not be ready with their transformation to adulthood. Children at this age are more prone to danger and temptation will be higher. Below are some of them that we should be aware of.

Unsafe surroundings

University belt is a jungle where there are different kinds of beasts that are just waiting for the right timing to eat your child alive. Although your child can still meet true friends, there are more unknown enemies. Drugs, violence and sexual harassment are just a step away. Fraternities and sororities are social groups that can promote brotherhood. However, not all of them are serving the real purpose. You must be very watchful.

College pressure

Entering college is not a joke. Although it looks fun when your child is exploring his newly found lifestyle, there is a lot of pressure your child will face. Thesis, projects, and tons of term papers can be nightmares to your precious child. Parents who did not experience to enter college may not understand this, but using parent instinct can help them. Moral support is what they need most.

Intimate relationships

This is also the time when your child can enter into a deep relationship. There are two dangerous situations our child may experience; a serious heartache or early parenthood. Most boys hide their emotions so you must be a keen observer. Some girls give their body and soul to prove they love a guy, especially now that pre-marital sex is rampant. However, trust should always be there. Overprotecting your child is also unhealthy.

Family problems

There will always be some problems within the family and your child is now old enough not to be affected. If this will be the case, his school performance will also suffer. Times like this, the whole family must be calm when dealing such. It is important for our child to understand that there is no such thing as perfect family. Neglecting his studies will be an added problem. You should teach your child how to be mature enough and accept that life is not always fair.

Money matters

Tuition fees and other school expenses are getting higher each year and we cannot stop it. Sometimes, our best may not be good enough to support him financially. Teaching your child how to handle money is very important. If your child knows how to choose the right friends, he can still enjoy his youth without hurting your pocket. Practical spending is a must. If your child wants to be a working student, make sure his studies will still be his priority.

College life is the last step towards a better future. But it is just the first step to the real world.

HOW TO PREPARE A TABLE OF SPECIFICATIONS

Image from: Free Online Clipart

The Table of Specifications
is a blueprint for the preparation of an exam. It serves as the "map" or guide to assigning the appropriate number of items to topics included in the course or subject. The following is a simplified method of preparing a Table of Specifications.

1. List all the topics that are included in the subject or course.
2. Assign corresponding percentages based on the professional requirements or
institutional requirements. Below is an example:

Subject - CLINICAL CHEMISTRY 2

Topics included:

a. automation - 20 %
b. electrolytes - 15 %
c. enzymology - 25 %
d. endocrinology - 20 %
e. toxicology - 20 %

This gives a total of 100 %

3. Decide on the number of items that you would like the test to be. Let's say you
wanted a 160 item - test; the number of items per topic would then be:

a. automation - 20 % - 32
b. electrolytes - 15 % - 24
c. enzymology - 25 % - 40
d. endocrinology - 20 % - 32
e. toxicology - 20 % - 40

This gives a total of 160 items.

4. Assign the specific type of question you would like to ask depending on what
skill or cognitive learning, you would like to emphasize.
For example, you would
like to emphasize the principles in automation, then you may prepare the
questions this way:

a. automation - 32 items

Essay = 10 questions
Identification = 12 questions
Multiple choice = 20 questions

This gives a total of 32 items.
This also is done with the rest of the topics.

SHARING IN SO MANY WAYS

Giving and sharing would be more meaningful if it does not involve only the financial and material aspect but more of yourself as well. In this particular instance, people shared by donating their BLOOD!

Every year in our University, we sponsor and facilitate a voluntary “Blood Letting Program” to encourage people to share what they have and help the less fortunate. The blood bags collected would be donated to hospitals and made available to those who do not have the financial means to buy blood for ailing relatives.

Everyone is encouraged to participate as long as he/she meets the criteria for blood donors. The donor often realizes that his donation is something special because he has really given a piece of himself to other people; that another person lived because of his blood!

BE SOMEONE SPECIAL, DONATE BLOOD VOLUNTARILY ( contact your local blood bank center)!
By the way, donating blood could be good for you. Read more from this link:
Doctor NDTV

This is what true sharing is all about!

SWIMMING AND RELATED DISEASES

It is great to be out in the beach in the mornings and evenings, with the cold, ocean air playing on your face and the brackish water pouring in into your pores. But watch out for those diseases that you can catch while enoying your swim. You can contract the following intestinal conditions through accidentally swallowing the infected water. These are the following microorganisms you could come in contact with:

1. E. coli infection - causative agent - Entamoeba histolytica - causing diarrhea from contaminated water
2. Shigella infection - causative agent- Shigella bacilli - causing bacillary dysentery and fever, from contaminated
water.
3. G. lamblia - causative agent - Giardia lamblia - causing giardiasis and diarrhea
4. Hepatitis A vrius - causing jaundice and liver damage.
5. Fungi or bacteria - causing Otitis externa or Swimmer's ear(an ear infection). Swimmer's ear because of long exposure to water. This occurs especially in children.

Certain skin diseases could also be acquired through the contaminated water; so, before you eagerly splash into the water, make sure the establishment have proper cleaning and sanitation protocols in place.

ANOTHER PROTEST AGAINST THE OIL PRICE INCREASE

All images from: Free Online Clipart
I don't usually write about politics and economics but I can't help myself today. Classes were suspended again because of a jeepney strike. I don't blame the jeepney drivers as they feel it their responsibility to air their grievances.

I would take to the streets too, if the opposition could show me a better alternative to the Arroyo government.

If we are truly patriotic, would the nation not be our first priority? Our economic progress is being downgraded by all these rallies and activities the opposition is facilitating and organising. Isn't that un-nationalistic?

I am not an expert on political issues, and neither am I an expert in writing, but it is very plain to see that the opposition is taking a field day out of the fervor of our idealistic youth and other groups with legitimate complaints, to advance their cause-whatever it may be.

God bless the Philippines!

SUMMER SIEGE BY: BLUDRAGON '88 - FROM A CONTRIBUTOR

SUMMER SIEGE 2008

By: CALL SIGN- bludragon`88

Who would have thought that summer can be fun without visiting the famous beach resorts in town?

It all started by a simple question “How was your weekend?”, asked by one of my instructors and I replied “Fun, I played airsoft” he..he..he.. I got shocked after I answered that question because My other instructor said he is engaged in that kind of sport, too. It’s cool isn’t it? When you find out that someone in medical field appreciates the type of sport you played. It may sound funny, that we, as health providers, who will someday take care of real soldiers can be trained how to fight like they do… huh!

Heard about Airsoft? Let me first define it… According to wikipedia Airsoft is a combat sport similar to paint ball in which participants eliminate opponents by hitting them with (6mm occasionally 8mm) plastic BBs, launched from airsoft guns, that can be powered by CO2, green gas, spring or electrical powered gearboxes actuating pistons, it is run by players themselves using agreed upon rules and become more realistic and fun if a game marshal controls the flow of play. It may also have game scenarios according to mission type, depending on number of players per teams, in-game objectives and duration of the game. But the most popular game scenarios include center-flag capture or recovery, team flag delivery, hostage-rescue, ambuscades, raid or assaults and death match (all-out elimination) skirmishes.

Airsoft became popular when variety types of weapon designed as replicas of real firearms, tactical gears and accessories used by militaries and police came out in the market. I know that whenever you hear about war game simulation the only player you may think of are men. But hey! There are women and children ages 8-11yrs old playing this type of combat sport.

I even got some of my classmates interested and made them play with me. Some were also amazed by the moral support that my whole family is giving. As day goes by we never stop talking and sharing good experiences about these games, what’s the newest guns? Or tactical gears? And what store provides the cheapest accessories.

This is one summer spent not only with Kapuso but also with Kapamilya with Mom bearing the rank of the general but not in military simulation. But the general of the Mess Hall providing food and drinks for her family while playing the game.

Care to join?!?

A UNIQUE HOBBY

At first, I was reluctant to post this article in my blog. This is because one of my blogs campaigns against violence on TV. But on second thought, I realized that things are not evil in themselves; they become instruments of good or evil depending on how we - humans - utilize them. Take for instance - guns, we usually associate guns with violence, but sometimes we tend to forget that they also symbolize protection and security.

We feel safe when we know that our armed forces, are trained and ready to respond to any threat to national security. In this manner, guns are used in a positive way.

There is an existing "hobby" being played, which they call "Air soft". This is a "war game" participated in by members who set the scenario of the game, themselves. They agree upon a certain objective or target.

Francine and Jeicel immersed in the game.

They play in a real forest and in a mountainous terrain.

Participants say it develops critical thinking, enhances decision making abilities and is an excellent, physical exercise as well.

MY THOUGHTS ON DEATH

Image: FreeDigitalPhotos.net

"It is often said that death comes like a thief in the night." How true! Just this month a co-worker who was seemingly healthy went to bed and never woke up.
(May he rest in peace). The doctor said it was myocardial infarction....
and I was just talking to him the day before!

He talked about his plans to visit his daughter abroad after he retires, and to spend some time with his grandkids. He even talked about buying a bigger house in the outskirts of the city.

This has kept me wondering - I have my plans too. Up to what extent would I be able to live and implement these plans? I have no idea! - and NO ONE KNOWS but God.

I believe death is predetermined; that when it is my time to die, I cannot escape the scythe of death no matter what I do.

And I would certainly act differently, if I have had any inkling of the day of my demise.

And again: " Is there life after death?" A profound question, which I would not attempt to answer, as it requires sufficient knowledge and data to be able to do so (which I don't possess).

Let me focus on the question:

"WHAT WOULD I HAVE DONE, HAD I KNOWN THE DAY OF MY DEATH?"

Perhaps, I would have forgiven everyone who had done me wrong.
Visited each of my relatives and told them how much I love them.
Doled out those "excess" material things to people who needed them more.
Shared more of my time and knowledge with whoever is interested.
Have gone skydiving - I had always wanted to feel how it is like to "fly".

Image: FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Danced and bathed in the rain.
Toured the hills where the Sound of Music had been filmed.
Wrote that novel I had always wanted to write.

and....many more....

if I knew the day...perhaps... but I don't.
